A pub with a difference

A pub with a difference

When NOMA asked us to devise a way to bring a community together at their development in central Manchester we responded with The Pilcrow – a pub in which every element was built by members of the public working collaboratively with master craftspeople. Not only would the area gain a pub and increasing footfall, it would have an engaged community who felt invested and responsible for the neighbourhood.

Over 12 months with hundreds of volunteers and craftspeople from across the North West, The Pilcrow opened in September 2016 and was awarded a D&AD pencil in 2017.

It’s now operated by All Our Yesterdays. Go and say hello.

An open design studio established to create a dynamic and distinct environment for the NOMA neighbourhood. All activities at PLANT focus on participatory placemaking and provide something new to the people who use the surrounding area; whether that’s flexible furniture for Sadler’s Yard or a set of market stalls for upcoming traders, we’re all ears. The aim of this project is to foster community participation and build a characterful neighbourhood in a new city centre development.

Oh Christmas Tree

Oh Christmas Tree

Bringing Hungarian design and architecture practice Hello Wood to Manchester for the first time, we collaborated with them on the design and installation of a 14m high Christmas tree in Sadler’s Yard.

Sustainability was a key factor when considering the design of the tree as all wood used was to later become part of The Pilcrow; it has since been used in the construction of the furniture in The Pilcrow.

A series of exhibitions held in an empty unit within Manchester Victoria Station, aiming to make contemporary art more accessible and improve the connection between artwork and the public. Exhibitions included a solo show by Alistair Woods from Depot Art Studio which spanned across onto Sadler’s Yard, and a collaborative exhibition from artists, photographers and illustrators who work at the Whitworth Art Gallery. This is a self-initiated project and we are very keen to continue this in vacant space across the UK.

A free one-day musical festival for Manchester. When we aren’t designing and making things with the community we know how to throw a party. Headlined by Stealing Sheep, the Sadler’s Yard Summer Jam encouraged people to explore a new part of the city whilst providing them with excellent performances and street food. It wasn’t just about the music either; activities on the day included jam doughnut making with local bakery Blawd and glazing tiles for The Pilcrow. OH OK LTD oversaw all design, programming and event management of this city centre festival.   Returning for 2017.

Installation of 20 3D letters at Mercers Walk, a new public space for London located adjacent to Covent Garden. OH OK LTD worked alongside designer Tim Denton to create the fridge magnet-esque pieces, which serve as both decoration and public seating.   Rearranged on a regular basis to read terms such as WELCOME, EAT CAKE and CATS PONDER REMARK, they provide a new way for people to enjoy the space - and play with words.
